Historic Match Celebrating 150 Years of Petworth Park Sports Ground

This year, Petworth Park Sports celebrates 150 years since the creation of its dedicated sports ground - and to mark this important milestone, we’re hosting a truly special event: a cricket match between Petworth Park Cricket Club and the world-famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday, 8th June at Petworth Park Sports Ground.

Cricket has been played in Petworth Park since the early 1800s, with iconic illustrations by J.M.W. Turner showing matches on the lawn in front of Petworth House in the 1820s. In fact, Petworth Park Cricket Club was briefly a major team in the 1840s, playing five first-class matches - including two fixtures against the MCC in 1844 and 1845. Petworth claimed a thrilling 3-wicket win in the first, followed by a hard-fought draw in the second.

Those historic encounters took place on the original cricket lawn outside the House. Since then, the pitch moved to its current location in the southeast corner of the Park, with stunning views of Petworth House, the Park, and the South Downs.

Now, 180 years later, we’re honoured to welcome the MCC back to Petworth. It promises to be a memorable day of cricket, community, and celebration.

Match starts at 11:30am.

Join us on Sunday 8th June for:

  • A landmark match: Petworth Park CC vs MCC
  • Pavilion Bar serving food and drink throughout the day
  • A wonderful day out for all ages

Whether you're a cricket fan, a local history lover, or just fancy a relaxed day in the park, everyone is welcome.

Let’s make it a day to remember as we celebrate 150 years of Petworth Park Sports Ground and our enduring cricketing heritage.
