Petworth lost the toss and were asked to bat by the hosts and this proved to be a good decision as despite a very elegant 23 from Adam Downing and a solid 43 from Ian Pinnock, Petworth could only post 125.

A few wise words at the break focused the mind as Petworth came out to defend a low total. Early wickets would be key and Petworth took 4 wickets for 11 runs to reduce Southwater from 38-0 to 49-4. This was due to Shaun Guy 3/34 and Alex Rees 1/31 putting the pressure on at a crucial stage. Adam Downing then produced a spell of Glen McGrath accuracy only conceding 8 runs off his 9 overs and also taking a valuable wicket. Southwater seemed happy to attack from the other end and despite a wicket on his league debut for Alan Wakeford, Southwater edged over the line by 2 wickets.

Every match is a learning experience for this fledgling club so as the cold beer flowed discussions were held over "what could have been".
